Can I Be Hypnotised?

A self-test for hypnotisability

Most hypnotitsts and therapist tell you, everyone can be hypnotised, because they don't want to lose you as a client. And you never really know in advance, because it depends a lot your state of being, the theraputical relationship and how skillful the hypnotist or therapist is. Current hypnotisability tests that are scientifically valid all require the testing person to do the test in person, so I made this over-simplified self-test on hypnotizability and suggestablity, according to my own experience, just to give you an idea, not to exclude you, but to prepare you better for a session.

Hypnosis Test: count how many NOs you have.

  • Do you often lose yourself in a deep and interesting conversation and forget time? Yes | No

  • Do you space out a lot while doing repetitive work in general? Yes | No

  • Are you able to visualize your own kitchen in detail and imagine the smell? Yes | No

  • When you watch an intensively sad movie alone, can you let yourself cry with it? Yes | No

  • Old memories often pop up in your head when you are alone walking, driving or taking the subway. Yes | No

  • Can you wake up middle of the night and get back to sleep very quickly? Yes | No

  • Are you able to do meditation? Yes | No

  • Do people sometimes complain that you do not hear when they talk to you? Yes | No

  • If your answers have more than 3 Nos, you are not easily hypnotisable if you don't allow it. Maybe because you fear of losing control, maybe you don't trust easily, maybe you've had bad experience when you let it go, or maybe you have an analytical job such as accounting, engineering, and you are trained to overthink. But no matter what the reason is, it is not a limitation, but an inner power to protect youself.
In this case, I would ask you to listen to some self-hypnosis recordings on YouTube to learn to get used to this state of relaxation. It only takes a few times, and you will be able to relax quickly. It is also helpful to do some activities to align yourself with your body before, such as meditation, yoga, whatever bring your awareness back to your body from your brain, before the session.
The sweet spot lies between you strong intention and your ability to surrender.
